I’m currently working on a small catalogue of Tove Jansson’s illustrative art for my final Typography III project and, because I am me, I managed to incorporate some spot illustrations of my own (in the imaginary world of this catalogue/the made-up show it accompanies, these were commissioned by the museum to honour the centenary of her birth [in 1914]).

Each one is paired with a quote from the woman herself (or, in one case, one of her characters) and they’re all meant to be done by different artists, hence the slightly different styles.

This all started because I’m kind of in love with Jansson’s face and wanted to draw it, plus there are a ton of wonderful reference photos floating around on the internet that provided plenty of portrait fodder. It was also nice to work on a mostly self-directed painting project, as I’ve hardly even had the time to draw things of my own these past two semesters, let alone complete a full painting.

I look forward to posting the whole catalogue - it’s going to be hand-bound with a stitched binding and hand-cut die cuts on the slipcover, so if everything goes smoothly, it should be quite pretty!
